FAQ
Can I come in mid-way through the semester?
Absolutely! We recommend that you schedule an intro class to get you familiarized with the movements before you take a group class, but there is no set enrollment period. All classes are for all levels, all of the time! Capoeira is a complicated art form, but the methodology of teaching passed down from Mestre Bimba is simple, and has been proven with time. This is part of the reason we cover many movements and combinations in each class, with a limited number of repetitions of each movement/combo. You will not learn all of it in a single class, or even in a month. But consistency and dedication will get you to your goals in Capoeira Regional.
How old do my kids need to be to enroll?
The beauty of the Family Class is that you will be learning alongside your child. The classes are 50 minutes long, and include about 15 minutes of music. Does that sound like something your child is up for? Teens and Pre-teens might want to consider taking our adult classes (and you are welcome to joins us there as well!).
No one is too old for capoeira! At the Fundacao Mestre Bimba in Salvador, Bahia (Brazil), there are often people between ages 6-75 all in the same class! We adjust each movement to the abilities of your body, always with health and safety at the forefront, whether this means dialing it back a bit, or pushing a bit harder.
What if I’m not in very good shape/have an old injury?
No matter!! Capoeira regional moves at your pace. Your instructor will ask you to push yourself, but health and safety are always the most important thing. We work with you to avoid injury while gaining strength, flexibility, control and explosion. We adjust each movement to the abilities of your body, always with health and safety at the forefront, whether this means dialing it back a bit, or pushing a bit harder.
I have done other martial arts, how fast will I learn capoeira regional?
Capoeira regional is a unique art form. Any and all experience you have with movement and body control is likely to help you understand the physical part of capoeira regional, but the art is much more than just the physicality. You can use your own familiarity with moving your body to your advantage, but don’t expect capoeira regional to be the same as what you already know—even if you have practiced capoeira at other places—each school has its own methodology and philosophy.
Likewise, if you have no martial arts experience, you are not at a disadvantage.
Can I win a fight with capoeira?
We are here to learn about an art form, a cultural expression, a Bahian tradition. The best fight is the one that you avoid! Capoeira Regional does offer specialization courses that are specific to survival, but first you must learn the basics—all of them.
What if I only want to learn the ______ part?
Capoeira regional is a combination of mental and physical understandings and applications. Fort Worth Capoeira gives a holistic approach to the art. We believe that if you were to break it into just certain components, that it would no longer be capoeira regional.
